From the beginning, computing has been inspired by nature. Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) are adaptive systems, inspired by theoretical immunology and observed immune functions, principles and models, which are applied to problem solving. The immune system is a complex of cells, molecules and organs which has proven to be capable of performing several tasks, like pattern recognition, learning, memory acquisition, generation of diversity, noise tolerance, generalization, distributed detection and optimization. The biological immune system is a highly parallel, distributed, and adaptive system. It uses learning, memory, and associative retrieval to solve recognition and classification tasks. In particular, it learns to recognize relevant patterns, remember patterns that have been seen previously, and use combinatorics to construct pattern detectors efficiently.AIS is a sub-field of Biologically-inspired computing, and Natural computation, with interests in Machine Learning and belonging to the broader field of Artificial Intelligence. In this paper, the standard types of AIS are examined—Negative Selection, Clonal Selection and Immune Networks
